Matisse to Dior to Chanel to Chagall

CANNES, France — I often wonder about the frivolousness of clothing. What I mean is clothing- materially speaking – never acted as a peace ambassador between countries or single handedly solved global economic crisis. No, clothing merely covers our bodies simply to fill a necessary social institution.

So what is it then that we make such a fuss over? Just as a reflective side note, I must point out that without clothing we may very well freeze to death or severely offend a passing neighbor should we decide to opt out of our clothes for a day!. However, how can we truly appreciate this not exactly lifesaving matter when there are more pressing things to discuss?

I will continue by turning the attention towards this illustrious “fashion” rather than mere “clothing” as fashion refers to something more – something that as a sum is certainly greater than its parts. If I may, let me suggest that fashion actually has connections to the more intellectual nature of subjects.

If I may, let me suggest that fashion actually has connections to the more intellectual nature of subjects.
Take Art, for example. This is a respected discipline although I’m sure most would argue that fashion is art in its own right – but allow me to speculate for a moment, for arguments sake. Art has many forms including such expressions as sculpture, painting, pointillism, drawing, watercolor, pottery; all are revered as a way for humans to express themselves. In fact, the ability to create “art” is one aspect of the human species that sets us apart from our fellow animals. We, as creative beings, are able to construct meaningful displays of our feelings, emotions, and histories through creative creation. And may I say that isn’t this what fashion is about as well? An imaginative composition of fabrics and colors and textures – I mean, you don’t very well see apes matching their handbags with their shoes, now do you?

Looking more closely, you may even see the connection between the more well-known artists and the better known fashion heroes. For one, Chanel, Dior, Matisse and Chagall are ALL French. Secondly and more importantly, is it SO unfair to say that “fashionistic expression” pardon the outright word coining – but I am an AR-TEEST gets its cues from the great artists? Take Matisse’s style of bold colors and shapes. Has not the house of Dior flirted with power purples and bold reds in certain Spring/ Summer collections? And take Chagall’s airy, dreamy style. Has not Chanel tantalized us with soft and feminine pieces throughout decades past?

Hear, hear – fashion IS a reflection of the great artists and must be respected as so. This is not clothing we wear; this is daily works of art that we put on blank canvases (our body) each and every morning as we go out into the museum which is the world!
I declare that FASHION is ART!
